Chapter 27

Kurganhammer blinked the spots from his vision.

Flyke already had his eyes closed. He was at Kurganhammer’s feet, fighting unconsciousness. He used the extra seconds in which Kurganhammer was blind to leg sweep the Guardsman.

The plot worked.

Kurganhammer quickly got up, but was met with a roundhouse kick to the face. He dropped his staff and fell to one knee.

Flyke snatched up the staff and threw it away from them.

“You were never good at hand-to-hand combat, Kurganhammer.” Flyke picked up the sword that he dropped in their melee. “You relied too much on that pitiful staff. Given to you by the Nepublicans, wasn’t it? The short blade at the one end can never touch flesh or . . . I don’t remember. They were cowards, too.”

Kurganhammer roared and charged Flyke.

The Throck traitor turned out of the way and slapped Kurganhammer on the back of the head with the flat of his sword.

“That was some spectacle out there,” Flyke said. “After I beat you, I’ll see if your friends are dead yet. Then I may try my luck with a god. After that light show, the once Wamu must be considered a threat to the Three Armies. I’ll have to eliminate him.”

“There are no Three Armies, you idiot.” Kurganhammer saw that his staff was too far away. He needed a new attack plan and the time to formulate one. “The Tinatost and Jokai betrayed the Throck.”

Flyke was startled by his revelation, so much so that he loosened his grip on his sword.

That was when Kurganhammer struck.

The last Elite Guardsman broke Flyke’s sword wrist. This drew a cry from Flyke that made Kurganhammer smile.

Kurganhammer then elbowed Flyke in the chest, then pivoted toward Flyke, punching the man in the side of the head.

Kurganhammer bent to retrieve Flyke’s sword.

Flyke clutched his head with one hand and with the other fiddled with something in his boot.

Kurganhammer laid the blade on the back of Flyke’s neck.

Flyke didn’t move a muscle. His eyes darted all around. The traitor was trapped, which made him more dangerous and unpredictable.

Kurganhammer wanted to say something final before killing Flyke. No words came. Too much rage stifled his rational side.

He hesitated too long.

Flyke drew a short knife from his boot sleeve and plunged it into Kurganhammer’s thigh.
